"There is no frigate like a book / To take us lands away,
Nor any coursers like a page / Of prancing poetry."

Poetry is our awkward child. You want to tell everyone that despite appearances, she has immeasurable gifts and grace, but people seem to always squirm, look at their phone, and tell you they have dry cleaning to pick up. These aversions can mostly be traced back to bad childhood experiences or the fact that they have never really even tasted poetry. But with a little effort and perhaps a spoonful of sugar you might find a poem to be your favorite meal, your most supportive friend, and your go-to read for humor, wisdom, and a deeper understanding. You have to trust me on this. If you don’t, consider the fact that two evenings last fall, 2,500 people filled Benaroya Hall for two poetry readings (Wendell Berry and Billy Collins). Listening to that many people swoon and chuckle in unison is something you remember. They didn't come because it was something that was "good for them." They came to enjoy and appreciate one of the oldest and most enduring art forms. Reading poetry can be an everyday before-bed pleasure or a once a year event. We are going to celebrate poetry in April, the official poetry month, with a big contest and by replanting our poetry pole near the front counter, where kids can thumbtack poems on the trunk like leaves. Join us. Don’t miss this. It’s fun, important, stuff.

APRIL FOOL'S DAY

April Fool's Day

Gotcha!

April Fool's Day was originally celebrated in the 17th century as a way to ward off evil spirits. Somehow that turned into the April foolishness we see today, which is all in good fun for the most part. Here are some children's books about the funniest holiday of all.
