Written in the 1940s but left unpublished until 1990, this is Alfau's hilarious and innovative epic of American immigration. Its opening line is: "The moment one learns English, complications set in." It is exactly these "complications" to which we are treated over the course of this novel, which is at once darkly humorous and strangely apocalyptic.
