"Books are a uniquely portable magic." —Stephen King

Island Books

After school starts we get a wave of moms entering the bookstore in a cheerful daze, as though they have completed some kind of exhausting summer parenting marathon and are now coasting toward a quiet meadow in search of a satisfying read (and perhaps a glass of wine).

This makes me think of a mother bear and her two cubs I saw on the trail in September a couple of years ago. This mother was not relaxing. She was desperately trying to stuff as much grass into her mouth as she could. Winter was coming and the berry season had been poor. I watched her for an hour, stocking up, and her paws and eyes never stopped moving.

September for me is the beginning of the "never stop moving" retail season. New books are piling in the door and we are reading, shelving, sharing, and selling as fast as we can. Our quiet meadow is January. Right now everyone is reading The Orchardist and Where'd You Go, Bernadette. Next week it will be Michael Chabon and Lee Child's newest. Then Kingsolver, Rowling, Rushdie, and Follett. I have never seen such a packed fall. James has a list below of new fall books, but my advice is to just stop in once a week to see what has arrived ... and keep stocking up. Winter's on the way!
