"If you only read the books that everyone else is reading, you can only think what everyone else is thinking." Haruki Murakami

Island Books

Though there is a case made by the January firsters, I have decided to side with the Jewish folks, the teachers, and the moms. And so the New Year here at Island Books starts in September.

We are sharpening our pencils and opening fresh journals. The August to August planners are selling by the dozens, new iPads have been handed out to the high school, and publishers, parents, and shopkeepers are all focused on their big calendars and what happens next.

Well, almost everyone. My son, a senior in high school, who we are "encouraging" to write essays and prepare applications, seems to be in some sort of Zen hangover from his summer wilderness experiences in Alaska. He tells me it's all about "being in the present." He tells me I worry too much and too early about things like the Christmas retail outlook and the end of the year tallies. He tells me he is going on a Buddhist retreat at Thanksgiving and I shake my head and sputter, "Retreat from what? You are seventeen!"

He's right of course. "Now" is fine. It is a lovely, soft, cool, colorful time of year. A time when families find their rhythm, routine, and purpose. A time when the bookstore, with all its comforts and wonders, really shines and shelters. The staff and customers are returning from their adventures and summer reading and have much to share. Nancy's been scouring the gift shows and there are piles of new jewelry and stationery items. Lori has the children's section chock full and humming with the best and largest selection in the whole NW. The front half of the store is, as usual, surprising, eclectic, and informative. Cindy, Marni, Kay, and I are grateful for your company and eager to help. Our website, managed by James and Miriam, is one the most interesting (I think) in the country. And don't forget, all new (and old) iPad owners can buy through the excellent Kobo store link and support your local bricks and mortar.

We only get one September a year here in the Northwest. There is no hurry really. The winter holidays will come at their own pace. Let's enjoy this time. Make space for stories and sharing. Give yourself an autumn afternoon with a book.

Yours,
Roger Page

COUNTER INTELLIGENCE

Cindy's September Pick: Night Film

We read a lot, and despite ourselves, we're guilty of playing favorites.

For example, this month Cindy is excited about Night Film by Marisha Pessl. This is Pessl's first work in seven years, since her much-talked-about bestselling debut novel, Special Topics in Calamity Physics. A richly imagined gothic whodunit, Night Film follows a disgraced journalist investigating a woman's murder. The victim's father is a reclusive horror film director, and the truth of what happened is as dark and complex as the character's mind.

Here, our booksellers share their other September recommendations.
