"A lot of people ask me if I were shipwrecked and could only have one book, what would it be?
I always say, 'How to Build a Boat.'" —Stephen Wright

Island Books

This month we are featuring a visit by Daniel Brown, the author of The Boys in the Boat, the now classic account of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team. I used to hang around some women's rowing teams in my youth, not because I admired their vigor and good carriage, but because I had a friend who was the coach. I remember distinctly the excitement of hearing the words, “Ready all,” on the water and then seeing the coordinated power of the boat leaping into action.

“Ready all” is an appropriate command for Island Books this start of the school year. Nancy went to San Francisco in August and tastefully dropped tens of thousands of dollars at the gift show buying inventory for the fall. Most of her loot arrived in a backroom tsunami this past week and we scrambled to get it on the floor. We also did our annual inventory over Labor Day and you’ll be happy to hear that that we have 22,000 titles all accounted for and many many more on their way.

The children’s section is looking particularly flush with great picture books and teen reads. Up front we have some signed first editions (Louise Penny, David Shields, and more) and expect a steady stream of blockbusters and some of those weird cool books that you seem to only find on our cedar shelves.

Ann Peterson is making her local Island Treats chocolate day and night and the calendars are here awaiting your schedules. Nancy and I are launching our last toward college on Sept 20th, after which we will need a big hug and plenty of distraction. We plan to make this race to the holidays a winner and will be pulling with everything we’ve got. Stopsky’s is gone, sadly, but Homegrown is coming (hopefully in December). Meanwhile, there is plenty of parking and reasons to join our jolly crew this fall.

Ready all?

PRINCESSES WHO GO AGAINST THE GRAIN

Girl Power

Don't get us wrong--we've got nothing against princesses. But all too often, fictional princesses are merely pretty and passive instead of active and interesting. Here we feature a list of books that will fully satisfy the sparkle set while also sending the message that girls can--and should--be the heroes of their own stories.

COUNTER INTELLIGENCE

Marni and Miriam's September Pick

Marni and Miriam have a tendency to fall in love with the same books, and they're at it again this month with double the enthusiasm for local author Garth Stein's new novel, A Sudden Light. Rich in atmosphere and set in an old Seattle mansion, Stein's latest does not disappoint. This is the story of a boy's quest to save his parents' marriage and the unexpected family secrets he unearths along the way.
