That's been our goal for thirty years on this island. Sometimes it has meant a hometown smile of recognition, or taking extra time to find the perfect gift for your five-year-old, and other times it's meant using the most up-to-date technology to solve our customers' surprisingly varied requests. We update our networks and databases, surf the web, and answer emails not because we find the technology entertaining, but because we find you entertaining. And we want to stay connected with you.

Wait a minute -- where’s the shopping cart?

First of all, we honestly prefer to have you come into our store. We love talking with you, giving book advice, and swapping stories. We believe our store has a special atmosphere –- a special sense of place that is essential to our island community.

Now to answer your question: We have chosen not to have a shopping cart and book database on our website because we have found from past experience that web-based bookselling software makes more mistakes and has less insight, personality, understanding, efficiency, and humor than our booksellers. We have chosen rather to invest in an intelligent cadre of booksellers who average more than 12 years of bookselling each. They delight in answering challenging book queries and finding gifts for the enigmatic, rushed, or needy. They like to listen, and they give pretty good advice. Our state-of-the-art ordering system can search out books new and used from thousands of sources across the country. Many, many titles can be obtained in 24-48 hours.
