A Conversation with the Candidate: Craig Reynolds

During the month of October, we are hosting meet and greets with candidates for the Mercer Island City Council. This Sunday we welcome Craig Reynolds to meet his consituents.

About Craig:

My name is Craig Reynolds, and I ask for your vote for the Mercer Island City Council.
Read below to learn more about my vision for the island, my experience, and my philosophy.

A Vision for Mercer Island

Mercer Island is a special community. We have 475 acres of park land, incredible natural beauty in a near-perfect location next to a major city, a full-service community and events center, an amazing school system, easy car and mass transit access to Seattle and eastside suburbs, locally controlled emergency services, and a publicly funded youth and family services program to provide a social safety net with help for those who need it. And more importantly, we have an educated, passionate, and caring population with an active commitment to volunteerism and community service. I have lived in many cities around the country, and none of the others provide the quality of life that Mercer Island provides.
It is difficult to imagine a community with more natural advantages than ours. But what we do with these natural advantages will determine what kind of city we become. I believe that much of what makes this city wonderful is the collection of services that our city provides. Together, working as one through our city government, we can make our city a better place.
The next few years will be very challenging for Mercer Island. We can waste resources resisting inevitable change, or we can find ways to capitalize on the resulting opportunities while still preserving what we love about Mercer Island. I prefer the latter option, and, with your vote and your help, I will work to make Mercer Island an even nicer place to live, while simultaneously preserving all that makes Mercer Island great.
In a nutshell, making Mercer Island better means finding a way to say yes. Yes to opportunity. Yes to change. And yes to preservation of that which makes us great.

Why Vote for Me?

I recognize that the Council is a collaborative body. No councilmember can accomplish anything alone. I am a dedicated coalition builder and can work to create consensus on appropriate Council goals and strategies. I am a clear communicator, both orally and in writing. And I know how to listen. I will keep an open mind to any and all solutions in order to maximize value to the community.
I listen. I have no agenda beyond ensuring that the city delivers a full suite of services to the residents in the most efficient and effective way possible. I recognize that I may not always know the best way to do this, but I am a firm believer in the adage that “none of us is as smart as all of us.” Accordingly, I will approach each problem the city faces with open ears and an open mind.
I care. Few things frustrate me more than an attitude of “I do not use that service, so why should I pay for it?” I recognize that a community and a government exist because we are stronger together, and that everyone benefits when everyone gets something from that communal effort, even when it means we sometimes pay for services that do not personally benefit us. I care about my neighbors, and I want them to get the services that they want and need.
I am open and honest. The best government is an open and transparent government. You will always know what I am thinking, and I am dedicated to sharing complete and accurate information, and making fact-based decisions.
My career as an actuary has helped me to develop skills the city needs right now. Actuaries work with mathematics to make long-range forecasts and use this information to ensure that insurers can deliver their promises to policyholders. These same skills can be applied to help the city cost-effectively deliver services to its residents.
