"A lot of people ask me if I were shipwrecked and could only have one book, what would it be?
I always say, 'How to Build a Boat.'" —Stephen Wright
The Boys in the Boat, the now classic account of the 1936 University of Washington rowing team. I used to hang around some women's rowing teams in my youth, not because I admired their vigor and good carriage, but because I had a friend who was the coach. I remember distinctly the excitement of hearing the words, “Ready all,” on the water and then seeing the coordinated power of the boat leaping into action.
“Ready all” is an appropriate command for Island Books this start of the school year. Nancy went to San Francisco in August and tastefully dropped tens of thousands of dollars at the gift show buying inventory for the fall. Most of her loot arrived in a backroom tsunami this past week and we scrambled to get it on the floor. We also did our annual inventory over Labor Day and you’ll be happy to hear that that we have 22,000 titles all accounted for and many many more on their way.
The children’s section is looking particularly flush with great picture books and teen reads. Up front we have some signed first editions (Louise Penny, David Shields, and more) and expect a steady stream of blockbusters and some of those weird cool books that you seem to only find on our cedar shelves.
Ann Peterson is making her local Island Treats chocolate day and night and the calendars are here awaiting your schedules. Nancy and I are launching our last toward college on Sept 20th, after which we will need a big hug and plenty of distraction. We plan to make this race to the holidays a winner and will be pulling with everything we’ve got. Stopsky’s is gone, sadly, but Homegrown is coming (hopefully in December). Meanwhile, there is plenty of parking and reasons to join our jolly crew this fall.
Owner and Bookseller
Roger’s head almost spun off when Nancy recently returned from a 24-hour shopping marathon in San Francisco, loaded with all kinds of new toys, games, and unique gifts to stock our shelves.
Island Books hosts an open book club that meets the last Thursday of each month at 7:30pm. All are welcome to attend, and if you purchase your book here in the store you'll always get a 10% discount.
We always offer a 20% discount on the top ten bestsellers in non-fiction and fiction for the week, as reported by independent booksellers across the country.
